Flooring is the trade where the preparation is invisible and the failure is not. A subfloor that dips, squeaks or is out of flat will telegraph straight through whatever goes on top, and no quality of plank fixes it afterwards.
Different materials want different things. Wood needs to acclimatise in the room before it is laid and needs an expansion gap it can actually use. LVP and laminate are more forgiving of moisture but far less forgiving of an uneven substrate, every hollow becomes a flex point and eventually a failed joint. Tile wants a rigid base above all else.
Then there is layout: which direction the run goes, where the first row lands so the last one is not a sliver, and how it meets every doorway and transition. Those decisions are made before anything is fastened down.
